Acoustic and fire door solutions at Richmond Water Recycling Plant

PROJECT:

Acoustic and fire door supply & installation

INDUSTRY TYPE:

Infrastructure

CLIENT:

Sydney Water

LOCATION:

North Richmond, NSW

Initial project requirements:

In June 2023, Sydney Water commenced a significant upgrade to the North Richmond Water Recycling Plant (WRP) in New South Wales. The project aimed to double the facility’s capacity, to ensure it would meet the growing community’s needs while improving wastewater services.

As part of the work, a stand-alone brick pump room required a range of acoustic and fire-rated doors. These access solutions needed to satisfy stringent performance and compliance standards, while also matching specified finishes and hardware selections.

The structure presented some installation challenges, with precast concrete used in the lower sections and cavity brickwork above. To accommodate this variation in wall construction, Flexshield determined that a retrofit door frame design would be necessary.

Flexshield solution:

The Flexshield team supplied and installed seven high-performance door leaves, each engineered for its specific role within the facility.

The recommended solution included:

  1. Retro-fit door frames tailored to the building envelope
  2. Acoustic performance for pump room plant areas
  3. Fire-rated protection for switchgear areas
  4. Industrial-coated finishes
  5. Factory pre-hung doors with seals and hardware installed
  6. Secure packaging and transport to site
  7. Installation by experienced Flexshield technicians

Acoustic doors for the pump room were designed to meet an Rw36 rating, reducing operational noise and supporting a safer, more comfortable work environment. Fire-rated doors were supplied with a -/120/30 rating, offering protection in areas housing electrical infrastructure. All doors were factory pre-hung in powder-coated steel frames, with hardware and sealing systems fitted prior to dispatch.

In addition to the access doors, Flexshield designed and installed several 316-grade stainless steel ventilation louvres. These units were engineered with specific blade sizes and angles to prevent weather ingress while allowing airflow, and were selected for their durability and resistance to corrosion in a water treatment environment.

All products were packaged for safe delivery and arrived on site ready for immediate installation. Larger door pairs were positioned using a winglet lift, with fixings selected to suit the structural details of each wall section.

Results achieved:

Flexshield delivered a complete access solution that met all performance, installation, and durability requirements for the site, providing:

Improved acoustic control: Doors installed in pump room areas achieved Rw36 ratings, reducing noise emissions and supporting a healthier working environment.

Fire compliance for critical infrastructure: Fire-rated doors provided certified protection in areas containing electrical switchgear, providing asset risk management.

Efficient installation: Doors arrived pre-hung, sealed, and fully assembled, saving time and reducing labour. Pre hung, checked and fitted doors reduce onsite and multiple trades, keeping the project on track.

Long-lasting finishes and durable construction: Powder-coated steel finishes and 316 stainless steel louvres ensure long-term performance and corrosion resistance.

Contributing to infrastructure resilience

The Richmond Water Recycling Plant upgrade reflects an important investment in sustainable water infrastructure. Flexshield is proud to support this effort with purpose-built acoustic and fire-rated door systems that help safeguard health, safety, and productivity.
