The new facility will support maintenance work and servicing for the Royal Australian Navy's multi-role Taipan helicopter

Initial project requirements:

When ADF contractor Leonardo Australia invested in a new helicopter maintenance facility at Fishermans Bend in inner Melbourne, effective soundproofing was always going to be a key requirement of the project.

The new facility will support maintenance work and servicing for the Royal Australian Navy’s multi-role Taipan helicopter. Gearboxes for some foreign military and civil helicopters – which previously had to be returned to Italy for maintenance – will also be serviced on-site. This capability will support the ANZAC upgrade warranty and support requirements and be leveraged for current and future work programs.

The facility boasts a state-of-the-art SEA 1442 Systems Integration and Test Facility, full engineering and logistics capability, project management office, technical service desk and ongoing support service. Significantly, it is also equipped with a dyno room where the helicopter engines are tested, as well as adjacent workshops and control rooms.

All dyno rooms are notoriously noisy, and a helicopter engine dyno is no exception!

Project builders Kane Constructions contacted Flexshield to help create an acoustic solution for the new helicopter testing facility.

Flexshield solution:

The Flexshield team used Sonic System 50 mm ECONO panels – one of our most popular and versatile products – to soundproof the testing facility.

In fact, Flexshield supplied and installed over 1,400m2 of the modular panels to line the engine testing bay and adjacent workshops throughout the facility.

As a pre-finished modular product, installation time for Sonic System ECONO panels is greatly reduced. The panels are fixed to the walls and ceilings using a combination of direct fix through the panel and receiving channels which the panels slot into.

Sonic System ECONO modular panels are an extremely versatile soundproofing solution, and can also be used to build standalone acoustic enclosures, mobile screens, and sonic walls.

Results:

The facility has successfully been operating for over 12 months. Leonardo Australia, the high-tech aerospace, defence & security company, are pleased with the new facility.

“Our Fishermans Bend facility is a state-of-the-art centre built to service our Australia commitments,” Giorgio Mantegazza, Managing Director of Leonardo Australia said.

The project was delivered on time, and budget and the Sonic ECONO panel achieved the acoustic requirements set for the new facility.
