Over the years, many businesses have endeavoured to create a sound proof room or acoustic enclosure by soundproofing walls and attempting to carry out their own noise cancelling acoustics.

As a result of this, many myths have sprung up about soundproof rooms and plant enclosures which Flexshield – Australia’s industrial noise control specialist – would like to address immediately.

The first of these myths is if you line an enclosure or plant room with foam, it will drastically reduce noise.

Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Because sound from a source within an enclosure is made up of direct (non-reflected) and reflected (reverberant) sound, lining the walls, windows and doors with foam, mineral wool, corrugated cardboard – or even egg cartons! – will make little difference.

It may reduce the level of reflected sound but will have little to no impact on the direct sound and it is this that controls the sound level of the plant or machinery.

The second myth is to put a hole in the wall to let the noise out.

Some people think that if you cut or drill an opening in a plant room facing away from the generator or whatever plant you are trying to silence, this will reduce the noise in the area you want to protect.

That is not the case.

Once again, the overall sound will be a combination of direct and reflected noise.

Certainly the reflected noise will be marginally reduced, however the overall decibel levels will remain high, and of course you will now have noise egressing from the second opening, thus defeating the purpose.

The third myth is to arrange it so that the plant room or enclosure faces out to a thick hedge or strand of trees.

It’s easy to see why people might think that, given that thick foliage does slightly attenuate sound especially when it’s windy but mostly it’s simply a case of “out of sight, out of mind.”

For trees and shrubs to work as a soundproofing method, they need to be lush and thick…and tens of metres deep!

Plus if the leaves are particularly dense, flat and broad leafed, high frequency sound can actually be deflected back.

When you consider that even a small solid building may only provide around 15dB screening attenuation, what chance does a shrub have!?
