What are soundproof blankets, and do they work?

Soundproof blankets are large polyester-filled blankets with sound-absorbing material to deaden sound. They can be applied to walls and ceilings to block unwanted sound.

You may find soundproofing blankets referred to as acoustic blankets, acoustic curtains, soundproof blankets, soundproof curtains or as Flexshield refers to them, Sonic Curtains.

These temporary noise curtains can be erected anywhere. They are ideal as hoardings encompassing the entire site, or around mobile or fixed plants. Strategically placed eyelets and hook and loop joiners allow for multiple configurations and cover areas.

While soundproof blankets are ideal for use on construction sites, their versatility means they are just as effective in an enclosed environment such as a manufacturing facility.

How well do sound dampening blankets work?

While an acoustic blanket will not prevent all sound from entering or leaving an industrial working environment, it can dramatically dampen sound. Not only will it reduce noise escaping to any nearby offices, but it will also protect employees’ hearing.

An acoustic blanket can be used to wrap vibrating equipment or hung around the equipment to absorb noise – we have even used our acoustic blankets to make skirts.

Types of sound blocking blankets

• Sound-blocking blankets: Large and stiff, these are an excellent choice for creating sections within a space and blocking noise from getting through.
• Sound absorbing blankets: Thick and porous, these blankets allow sound waves to make their way into the fabric before absorbing the noise, much like a sponge absorbs water. These are a great choice if you want to reduce echo and reverb in a noisy warehouse or loft area.

When to use an acoustic soundproofing blanket

Soundproof acoustic blankets are ideally suited for use on construction sites. They are designed and manufactured to stand up to the rigours of the Australian environment while providing optimal noise control.

Yet they also excel in areas with many hard surfaces and few absorptive services, such as warehouses or manufacturing facilities. Sound waves love these large open spaces – since there are no porous surfaces to catch the sound waves, they can bounce around freely. This creates loud, harsh noise which can damage employee hearing, irritate neighbours, or distract nearby workers.
