Project background:
Generators are one of the most common industrial noise sources. In most cases they are real hazards, not just for those who are actually using the generator power, but also personnel maintaining and servicing the equipment.

Project specifics:
Palm Island Power Station is run by a bank of several generators. As they provide the only source of electricity to the island, these generators are in operation 24/7.

There was a requirement to bring the noise down to a safe level for the power station operators who had to perform maintenance and other duties.

Project challenges:
Due to North Queensland’s hot, humid climate, the units could not be wrapped up with close acoustic canopies without installing massive ventilation and cooling systems.

Flexshield solution:

Flexshield designed, manufactured and installed Sonic Curtain acoustic screens between each generator. The Noise Control Screens were manufactured in a concertina curtain style allowing full access.

When the maintenance crew start work on one generator, the noise control curtains are drawn between them and the operating gen sets provide complete acoustic isolation.

Flexshield was recently contacted by an OH&S representative for a large Australian expanded metal manufacture. The company had a band saw that produced noise levels above the allowed threshold.

We quickly engineered a solution making sure that every level of visibility, maintenance and operator comfort was taken into consideration.

Grinding Bay & Workshop Noise Control

Type of project:
Noise control for metal fabrication.

In metal fabrication workshops, noise levels normally range between approximately 80 – 125dB(A). Most common noise sources are from angle grinders, metal presses, and cutting saws plus the hammering and bashing on metal objects.

Hearing loss in this industry is a very real and common health risk. You can see in this project how our client had tried to contain some noise with the grey screens.

The project specifics:
This client had cordoned off a corner of their facility as a grinding bay. The grinding operation could be in operation for hours on end and was an extreme health hazard to the operators and those working nearby. The transmitted noise to the office was also a major nuisance.

Flexshield went to site and recorded an official level of 97dBA

The Flexshield solution:
After the initial site consultation, Flexshield manufactured and installed clear flexible noise control screens as an “L” configuration separating the grinding bay from the rest of the workshop.

The flexible noise control screens were designed to allow complete access for pedestrians, forklifts and product.

Being 100% clear also means that the sound control screens allow natural lighting and full visibility, both important safety features.

Initial project requirements:
The client was requesting noise control treatment to two large electrical motors driving pumps.

The noise levels generated were at an unacceptable level for workplace health and safety guidelines.

Project challenges:
The motors had numerous electrical, water and air feeds. There was a requirement to ensure that all penetrations could be had without compromising on the noise control effectiveness.

There was also an emergency stop button which could not be inside the acoustic enclosure and the enclosure had to be easily removed for regular maintenance.

Flexshield solution:
Flexshield designed, manufactured and installed 2 individual acoustic pump covers using Sonic System V50 acoustic panel for the roof and Sonic Curtain as the flexible sides of the noise control enclosures.

Using Sonic Curtain with Velcro slits and side joiners allowed for complete access whenever required and also meant that the penetrations could be formed in house at the manufacturing stage meaning a very quick and simple installation.

Type of project:
HVAC and Rooftop equipment noise control.

Most modern buildings utilise the rooftop space to house plant and equipment such as chillers, air-conditioning units, pumps, blowers, compressors and generators.

In most cases this requires some type of noise control barrier to protect local residents and business.

The project specifics:
A petrol station, convenience store and drive through take-away facility were being built amongst residential properties. The roof was to house the air-conditioning unit, chillers and HVAC equipment needed for the operation of the center.

Acoustic modeling was taken which showed that a noise control barrier would be needed on the rooftop plant to bring the noise levels down to an acceptable night time level for nearby houses.

Flexshield designed, manufactured and installed acoustic screens around the HVAC equipment.

The noise control screens were manufactured in a modular ‘clip together’ style which meant that installation could be done very simply as no heavy lift equipment was needed. Also being pre-painted and galvanised allowed for an instant visual fix by hiding the equipment from the neighbour’s view.

Initial project requirements:
The client had set up a drilling operation in a residential street to drill lines to run electrical services through.

Noise sources were both from the drill rig itself and also from other site equipment such as the air compressor and generator.

Project challenges:
The drilling company received warning from the Environmental Protection Agency that local residence had submitted official complaints due to the noise levels.

The EPA visited the drilling site and conducted noise testing showing that the levels were outside the allowable regulation.

The project was instructed to cease operation, meaning downtime and increased cost for the contractor.

Flexshield solution:
Within hours of first contact with the client, Flexshield was packing up for delivery 50LM of Sonic Curtains to hang on the temporary fence that the client had already installed.

The Noise Control Curtains were quickly zipped tied to the fence and upon a 2nd test by the EPA the site was given the green light to proceed!

A local resident commented that the noise levels had reduced dramatically.

Initial project requirements:

Flexshield was recently contacted by a Niche Engineering company to provide a noise control solution for one of their clients. Their client had ordered a foam fire suppression unit for an oil drilling platform off the coast of Papua New Guinea. On final inspection their client questioned the noise levels the pump produced and requested that a solution be provided before delivery.

The noise generated by the pump was 8 dB(A) above the legal limit of 85 dB(A).

Project Specifics:

The pump had a number of hoses, cables and ventilation requirements which had to be allowed for. These penetrations had to be included in the design of the enclosure, and there was a requirement that the enclosure could be ‘pulled back’ for access.

Flexshield’s solution:

Flexshield tailor designed, manufactured and installed a pump enclosure incorporating Acoustic Curtains, V50 Sonic System panel and Sonic Sorber acoustic foam.

The Sonic System made up the roof of the enclosure, and was mounted with lifting lugs for easy removal for pump maintenance requirements.

Using Acoustic Curtains with Velcro joins meant that the client was able to pull open the curtains to allow for more access or ventilation as required.

Noise Induced Hearing Loss is a very common risk for those working in metal fabrication workshops. The noise levels in these workshops average between 80 dB(A) to 125 dB(A) however any level above 85 dB(A) can cause irreversible hearing damage.

The project specifics:

This engineering company approached Flexshield as the noise in their workshop was at a dangerous level. They were concerned it could pose serious risks to the physical and emotional health of their staff, as well as clients visiting the workshop.

The client operates out of a large metal working shop, which incorporates a series of boiler maker, welding and grinding bays.

Flexshield’s solution:

To combat this noise, tailor made Acoustic Bays were erected in a series of cubicles in order to separate the welding and grinding process from the rest of the workshop. The Acoustic Bays were constructed from SonicSystem Panels and fitted with Rapid Roll Doors with Acoustic vision panels to meet the client’s specific requirements.

The client experienced significant noise reduction in their workshop. This reduction ensured the protection of visiting clients, and allowed staff to continue operations in a safer, more ergonomically pleasant work environment.
